With one of the nation's largest railroad yards, Elkhart is an ideal place for the New York Central Railroad Museum. Visitors enter the museum through an authentic 1915 passenger coach car and proceed through to a 100-year old freight house complex, interactive activity areas and actual train cars and railroad-related antiques. In the museum, visitors learn what it took to be an engineer and see many varieties of railroad cars that made up the nation's rail lines. The museum is located downtown, just north of Tolson Park near the Midwest Museum of American Art and the ELCO Performing Arts Center.
